Your nervous system runs on a finite metabolic resource. For new mothers, multiple burners run simultaneously and continuously. The viability burner tracks your child's physical safety around the clock. The bonds burner tracks every interaction and rupture. The autonomy burner registers the constant constraint on your time, body, and movement. The orientation burner processes the incoherence of a life that no longer resembles what it was.

The guilt that fires when you are depleted adds a fifth cost on top of the other four. The irritability, the touched-out feeling, the inability to tolerate noise — these are not character flaws. They are the readout of a depleted tank.

The identity shift

You are not who you were. That's not wrong.

Your whole life you were one way. Now you are different. Your capacity, your attention, your sense of self — all reorganized around someone else's survival. This is not who you are becoming. It is what the nervous system does when it assigns maximum priority to a new protection target.

The self that existed before is not gone. It is temporarily reorganized. The disorientation is accurate — it is not a symptom. The map does not fit the territory yet because the territory is still forming.
